Training in Transportation Engineering was introduced in 1943/44, one year after the establishment of the first Higher Technical School in Bulgaria.

The complete study programme takes 10 semesters.

Students of Transportation Engineering study about 50 disciplines with a total of approx. 890 hours.
In the first four semesters the training follows a unified academic curriculum. Afterwards, according to student wishes and performance, they are split into three profiles:

  • Road Construction;
  • Railway Construction;
  • and Transport Structural Facilities.

In the 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th semester students are trained separately in Road Construction, Railway Construction and Transport Structural Facilities.
Diploma project development takes place in the 10th semester. It is carried out independently by students under the supervision of a lecturer from the respective department depending on the topic chosen.The presentation of the diploma project is made in public, before a State Board of Examiners assigned by an Order of the Rector.

Students that have presented successfully their diploma projects obtain a diploma for completed higher education and a respective qualification. The diploma has a supplement, listing all disciplines studied, hours of study, grades from the examinations and diploma presentation.

Academic calendar
The exact academic calendar is determined each year by the Academic Council of the University.

The academic year consists of two semesters, each one of 15 weeks: autumn semester (from October to January) and spring semester (from February to June).
One regular and one supplementary examination session as well as project presentations follow the autumn semester.
The summer semester has one regular examination session, project defences, followed by field practices outside the University (in June and July).
The annual supplementary examination session is in September.
